The Noun Project: Wisecracks: Jokes as Design... →
This is the kind of daily design exercise I want/need to start doing.
thenounproject:
Since our launch we have seen The Noun Project community use symbols from the collection for pretty much every application. But something we have not seen is someone leveraging symbols to tell “jokes.” We invited David Owen Morgan of Faunt to tell us about his fascinating concept.

HTML
Lately I’ve been trying to build a webpage/app that I can convert to use on mobile. Unfortunately, its not going so well. So in an effort to convince myself not all hope is lost, I’m starting to mess around and build a custom layout for this Tumblr. Guess we’ll see how this goes.

What Font Should I Use? →
A simple guide on how to pick fonts for your design work. Recently I feel like I’ve hit a wall with the typography on my projects - everything I try just seems… off. This was a good refresher to get me thinking about the fonts I’m working with, what I’m trying to accomplish in the project, and reeling myself back into the basics.

You know what’s more helpful than telling me how I should organize my stuff? Don’t move my shit around in the first place!

Summer 2011
Yes, I know it’s July, but this past weekend was the first time this year that it’s actually felt like summer. And what better way to enjoy it than to go out, soak up some Vitamin D, and do it all in the company of some good friends?
Here are some interesting stories from this weekend:
Went down to White Rock with Almondy to hang out at the beach, except it was high tide, so we...

Man in the Mirror
Not that I care much for the Asia Game Show, and not that I care at all about Edison Chen, but this paragraph has made my week!
“Besides appearing in promotional material for the show, Chen will be performing, covering Michael Jackson’s “Man in the Mirror”. The song sums up Chen’s experiences during the past two years, unlike “Man in Front of the Mirror...
WikiLeaky
Have you ever been to a revolution where no one got hurt? … That’s not a revolution friends; that’s a party.
- Thomas L. Friedman
I really hate to give WikiLeaks any more exposure than it already has, but I can’t believe all the buzz this thing has been generating. I’m even more surprised by the public outcry for “democracy” and “freedom...

Shooting Stars
I wonder. How long has it been since I last gazed at the stars and wondered about the mysteries of the universe? Standing in my backyard looking for shooting stars tonight helped me remember just how big the universe is, and how lucky I am to be able to witness its wonder.
Hiroshima, 65 years ago
August 6th marked the 65th anniversary of dropping of the atomic bomb in Hiroshima, Japan. Gizmodo has posted a set of gut-wrenching interviews from survivors of this incident, which can be found here.
Having visited Hiroshima myself a few years ago, I can say the city, and likely the entire country, will never forget what happened that day. The A-bomb Dome pictured above stands as testament to...

The Lowest Common Denominator
Learning about and doing web design work is proving to be much more aggravating than I had originally anticipated. I think I remember now why I’ve avoided it for so long. As if designing for compatibility between 5 major browsers and 2 major OSes is enough, we now have droves of snobby mobile device users who “demand” to have a website display properly on their tiny 3”...

It LIVES!
After catching a movie at Riverport today, me and Alice decided to head into the heart of Richmond for some drinks. Of the places we regularly visit, there has been one that we both LOVE, but never seems to be open. Literally, we have been dropping by that place at least 6 times in the past year, and it was always closed!
We decided to try our luck again today, and to our delight, found the...

Things to do this week
I have a week off between semesters (as opposed to the 3 weeks everyone else gets =P), so this is my checklist of stuff to do:
wash my car
take my car to Aircare
do my taxes (it’s late, I know)
do my parents’ taxes
get a haircut
go to VGL
get rid of extra tickets to VGL
get CS4 working on Win7 (or get CS5)
pick up my UPass from school
relax
Unexpected things I have to do...

Translink drivers are assholes
To the bastard Translink bus driver who drove the 324 route around 12:45 today: FUCK YOU!
Thanks for passing me by as I was 3 seconds from the bus stop. Now I’m late for school and have to wait another half hour for the next bus, because your dumbshit employer only wants to serve 1 of the 13 cities in the area. And to top it all off, they hire fucking bastards like you who won’t stop...
So Ebert says games aren’t art. That does not make it true. I say games...

I HATE brown kids
From “Vancouver’s blondes” to the stupid brown punks who think they’re all hot shit, all I see is a generation of failure.
And to the dumbass kid I ran into tonight, learn to fucking drive before you tell me what to do on the road!

Why am I posting so much today?! Anyway, just wanted to share this before I forget again.
Curry and cream puffs
My friend Yoshio flew into town from Japan the other day, and we took him out to dinner in Richmond. One of the reasons we love that place is because they serve awesome katsu curry (pork cutlet with curry on rice); almost as good as what we had in Japan actually, despite it being a Taiwanese restaurant.
Anyway, it came with as small dessert as part of the set - a cream puff (the small ones that...
In For The Kill
I keep hearing this song recently. The last time was in class, when my instructor was showing us a video he made and he used it as the background music.
I’ve finally figured out where it was from: this game trailer!
The song is actually kinda growing on me.
Readability
I feel like ranting a bit today, and I happened to stumble up this website, courtesy of Yoshiboshi, so I thought I’d comment a bit.
While I agree that web design should try to involve and engage the user, the sad reality is that a vast majority of websites out there simply don’t have the excellent content to keep the reader wanting more. It’s easy to make a point on a single...

Me: I have to leave early tonight to finish cleaning my room. They’re coming in tomorrow to install the windows. D: I thought you installed Windows already. Me: Yeah, I installed Windows7. D: And they’re coming tonight to install Windows again? Me: No, they’re coming tomorrow morning. Why would they come at night? D: Wait, what? I’m confused. Didn’t you install...
Happy New Year!
We are now 5 days into 2010, and I am back to the grind at school. So let’s take a little time and reflect…. on the things I didn’t get to do during my 3 weeks off >.< :
Clean my room - well, I kinda cleaned 1/3 of it, enough for me to hook up my second monitor and walk to my closet;
Start on my portfolio - I wasn’t at home for more than 2 days at a time, and...

Unproductive weekend
The long weekend came and went, and I did next to nothing in terms of being productive. As a result, I will now have to cram for the rest of the week.
I should stop procrastinating…. and go to sleep.

Lemmings
So I was once again at the Metrotown bus loop today, waiting for the 49 bus to take me to school. As I was coming down the escalator, I notice about 6 or 7 people were already in line for the bus; the line was formed away from the curb, as I had expected.
So I took my place behind an elderly lady, but I stood a little to the left, just to see if the next person would follow me and bend the line....
Metro Vancouverites: Getting in your way at every...
Has anyone else ever taken the 49 bus from Metrotown station? If so, can you please explain to me why is it that everyone who lines up for this bus, no matter the time of day, forms the line in a way that it gets in the way of as many people as possible?!
This is one of the busiest bays at the station, and being right next to the escalator that connects to the Skytrain and the mall, is one of...

Hello? Is anyone home?
Wow, talk about being neglected. So its been about a month and a half since I posted anything. Part of the reason is that around the beginning of August I got super busy as I tried to wrap things up at work, and train the new guy. Then I found that being unemployed left me just about as busy as being at work.
The other reason is that I’m lazy. It seems that whenever I start a blog, I do it...

Technical Difficulties
I had originally wanted to make a post on Friday titled “HST = How to Screw Taxpayers”, which as the title suggests, was a long-winded critique of why the HST is bad for BC, and why I hate Gordon Campbell. However, due to the after effects of a virus infection, my applications now lock up on random, and as a result I wasn’t able to make my post. For those not in the loop about...
The 90s
I was tinkering around on a piano the other day. Or rather, I was watching Ms. S playing the piano, and she asked me to play something. I am not musically inclined at all, and my claim to fame on the piano is the Rugrats theme. But at one point during high school I got my friend to teach me how to play the intro to K-Ci & JoJo’s “All My Life”, so I was struggling to remember...
Stressed
I’m pretty sure the schedule in my head wasn’t supposed to have everything land around the same time…. But I always get myself into these situations by saying “yes” to too many things, and even I tried to planned my time in advance (shocking, I know), I’m still feeling the crunch.
So here’s what I need to produce within the next 7 days, loosely in the...

Will Wright
I always just knew him as the guy who designed SimCity, but this guy has some really good stuff to say, especially on managing a team of creative talent.
Check out the his interview in the New York Times.
Now take a step back and ask yourself why aren’t you working for him.
